Imperialism is causing food and climate crises, the starvation of people around the world, and the destruction of our planet. Imperialist competition for economic and political spheres of influence in the name of super-profits has plundered the world, destroyed the climate and environment, restructured food and agricultural production to serve the dictates of the global market instead of people’s needs, financialized the world economy that resulted in skyrocketing costs of food, spurred wars of aggression, spawned pandemics, etc. – all to the detriment of food security and food sovereignty of the people.
We rail against the machinations of US imperialism and other imperialist powers to dictate the agenda and direction of food systems transformation to address the global food and climate crises, such as the Global Food Security Summit they organized last September on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly to peddle their so-called Roadmap for Global Food Security.
These schemes do not address the structural roots of global hunger, food insecurity, and environmental devastation but instead perpetuate the oppressive, exploitative, and destructive political and economic system that allows monopoly corporations to rake in billions of profits while starving the working people who produce the world’s food and wealth and killing the planet.
Imperialism is using the food and climate crises to create further opportunities for its export of capital and plunder the resources of impoverished and hungry nations in the name of monopoly profits. On top of the USD 10 billion pledged last year, the US is mobilizing several billions of dollars more through the UN, international financial institutions (IFIs), and philanthrocapitalist institutions.
These powerful forces exploit the climate and food crises to justify how big corporations can control even more our food systems, including farmlands, water, seeds, and other productive resources. They invest in questionable profit-driven technologies such as the digitalization of agriculture, genetic engineering of crops, lab-manufactured meat, etc., along with greater use of agrochemicals. They peddle so-called nature-based solutions like corporate-driven conservation projects that grab massive lands and other resources from indigenous and farming communities.
Meanwhile, these agents of monopoly capital continue to deny the accountability of big corporations in causing the climate crisis, such as in food and agriculture production that they designed to become overly dependent on agrochemicals and fossil fuels.
These imperialist chains shackle our food systems and planet, and the world’s peoples must decisively break them.
We demand accountability from the governments and policymakers and challenge them to stand for the rights and interests of the people and uphold people’s democracy and sovereignty against imperialist agendas and impositions.
Resistance against imperialism to transform our food systems to become just, equitable, healthy, and sustainable through the implementation of genuine agrarian reform, the assertion of food sovereignty, promotion of people-led agroecology is indispensable in the people’s struggles and campaigns to truly address the food and climate crises. Rural peoples – the peasants, indigenous peoples, women, and youth – must be on the frontlines of this resistance.
We welcome efforts, for example, to build a broad and global people’s front to fight imperialism and an international people’s coalition to oppose climate imperialism and demand climate justice. The rural peoples and advocates of agrarian reform, food sovereignty, and agroecology must become active forces in these global movements.
Genuine agrarian reform now!
Assert food sovereignty!
Advance people-led agroecology!
Unchain our food from the shackles of imperialism!
End imperialism!
