Pesticide Action Network Asia Pacific (PANAP) has officially launched the Community-based Pesticide Action Monitoring (CPAM) Public Landing Page, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at amplifying advocacy against Highly Hazardous Pesticides (HHPs) and promoting agroecological alternatives. This innovative platform is a step forward in empowering farming communities, researchers, and advocacy groups by making crucial CPAM data publicly accessible.
Empowering Communities Through Accessible Data
For years, CPAM has been instrumental tool in documenting pesticide use, its impact on farming communities, and its adverse effects on health and the environment. By collecting data through surveys conducted by local partners, CPAM has provided critical insights for advocacy and awareness.
The CPAM Public Landing Page marks a new chapter in accessibility, offering select country-specific data to a broad audience, including researchers, academicians, CSOs, NGOs, local communities, and policymakers. This initiative aims to:
- Enhance public awareness of pesticide risks.
- Support evidence-based reporting and advocacy.
- Facilitate data utilization for national and international policy changes.
“This public platform represents PANAP’s commitment to transparency and empowerment. By making key CPAM data accessible, we are equipping communities and decision-makers with the tools they need to drive meaningful change.” Dinesh Rajendran, Pesticides Programme Officer, PANAP
The Consolidated List of Banned Pesticides and HHPs list: A Global Resource
Earlier this month, PAN International released two groundbreaking tools: the updated Consolidated List of Banned Pesticides and the List of Highly Hazardous Pesticides (HHPs). These resources aim to empower stakeholders to identify and phase out HHPs in agriculture, aligning with global commitments like the UNEA resolution on Highly Hazardous Pesticides and the newly adopted Global Framework on Chemicals (GFC).
The Consolidated List of Banned Pesticides identifies 568 pesticide active ingredients banned in one or more countries worldwide, the majority of which are HHPs. This highlights ongoing progress in eliminating these dangerous substances. PAN International urges countries and stakeholders to intensify efforts to meet the UNEA goal of phasing out HHPs by 2035.
The PAN HHP List provides a comprehensive overview of active ingredients that meet the criteria set by the WHO and FAO, as well as additional benchmarks established by PAN. Together, these tools serve as critical references for policymakers, advocates, and communities working to mitigate the risks posed by toxic pesticides.
A Unified Call for Action
The CPAM Public Landing Page, the Consolidated List of Banned Pesticides and HHPs list reflect PANAP and PAN International’s shared commitment to advancing agroecology as a sustainable alternative to chemical-intensive farming. Both initiatives underscore the need for urgent action, particularly in regions like Asia, Africa, and Latin America, where communities are disproportionately affected by HHPs.
