Then and now, agrochemical companies also continue to inflict harm on children\u2019s health and well-being without being held accountable,\u201d said Deeppa Ravindran, Protect Our Children from Toxic Pesticides Campaign Coordinator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the 20-minute documentary, entitled \u201cYoung and Poisoned,\u201d children are found to be engaged in child labor in floriculture farms in Tamil Nadu, plucking flowers in fields newly sprayed with pesticides, and at times even helping in the application of pesticides. Children are also frequently poisoned during the pesticide spraying season in mango orchards in Andhra Pradesh, through fumes that reach nearby schools and homes.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Young and Poisoned (2019): A documentary by PAN Asia Pacific\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kj2dMcn3kpQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In the Community Pesticide Action Monitoring done by PAN Asia Pacific in those areas, pesticides that are especially toxic to children\u2014such as <a href=\"https:\/\/files.panap.net\/resources\/pesticides-factsheet-hhps-chlorpyrifos.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">chlorpyrifos<\/a>, l<a href=\"https:\/\/files.panap.net\/resources\/pesticides-factsheet-hhps-cyhalothrin.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">ambda-cyhalothrin<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/files.panap.net\/resources\/pesticides-factsheet-hhps-cypermethrin.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">cypermethrin<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/files.panap.net\/resources\/pesticides-factsheet-hhps-paraquat.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">paraquat<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/files.panap.net\/resources\/pesticides-factsheet-hhps-monocrotophos.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">monocrotophos<\/a>\u2014were found. These pesticides are produced by both Indian manufacturers and the Big 4 agrochemical transnational companies, including Dow Chemicals, formerly Union Carbide of the Bhopal tragedy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to PANAP, pesticide companies are accountable for violations of the UN Convention Convention on the Rights of the Child, such as the right to life, the right to education, and the right to enjoy the highest standard of health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNowadays, the threat from chemicals do not come so much from big gas leaks but from everyday exposure. Pesticides can be toxic to children even at low doses. Even public health experts believe that pesticides are responsible for the \u2018silent pandemic\u2019 of neurodevelopmental problems affecting children around the world today\u2014from learning disabilities, to ADHD and autism. More decisive action needs to be taken to stop the poisoning of our children,\u201d Ravindran said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To help protect children from toxic pesticides, PAN Asia Pacific is calling for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/urge-the-state-governments-to-institute-pesticide-free-buffer-zones-around-schools\">pesticide-free buffer zone of at least one kilometer around schools<\/a>.
